Cockroaches in the winter

Canadians tend to breathe a tiny sense of relief in the winter months when it comes to pest control. This is because there is a theory among us that insects and bugs will die off and we won’t be bothered much until the warmer months hit. Although there is some truth to that as we aren’t burdened by the red ants, mosquitos and house flies, we can’t say the same for cockroaches. Yes, Cockroaches will die if exposed to frigid temperatures. But… They are smart little creatures that have existed centuries and centuries and have learned to adapt to literally every surrounding. In Canada and other ‘cold front’ counties, cockroaches will sneak their way indoors at all costs.

Like most living things, cockroaches seek out food, shelter and warmth. They are known to bring themselves indoors by any means necessary including being carried in on clothing, finding holes in foundations, and entering through unsealed windows or doors to name a few.

Because cockroaches are nocturnal, many homeowners actually don’t realize they have a problem until it’s too late. So, what do you need to know about these pests when it comes to keeping your home safe during these frigid months? Read on.

Where to Look:

Cabinetry – Take a peek inside your cabinets and move items around that you may not use every day. Look for smears and droppings (little specs of dirt). Cockroaches slender bodies can fit through the slightest of cracks, and they will sniff out even the smallest of crumbs.

Pipes – Cockroaches will use pipes as a means of travel. If you have an older home, especially one with a crawlspace, it is imperative to check for cracks in your old pipes often. The moisture and darkness provides a perfect home for cockroaches to thrive.

Trim/Moulding – Again, with being a super slender and adaptable creature, cockroaches see the perfect “hotel stay” in your cracked trim. Small cracks, and corners that don’t meet will provide the perfect pocket for cockroaches to take their daily slumber.

Appliances – Ovens, Microwaves, Heaters, Coffee machines, heaters…. You name it. They love it.

Furniture – Similar theory to the moulding and baseboards… Furniture, especially in unused rooms or storage provide the perfect spot for these creatures to live in or on. Inspect your furniture regularly.

Work stations – With a lot of us working from home, it can be easy to forget a plate or two at your workstation. It’s important to clean up any wrappers, food residue, plates and cutlery from your work stations.

What to do if you notice something ‘rochy?

Well… To be honest… If you see one, hear one, or suspect one… There’s likely more. Cockroaches breed quickly and it’s important to get to them before they multiply. Diligent sanitization, gel baits, and dust baits are all useful but should really be left up to the experts to help rectify the issue.
