How to keep the wasps away this spring…

When wasps settle into a new colony, they are VERY hard to get rid of. They are dangerous and willing to fight for their colony when provoked which is why it’s so important to prevent them from making their way onto your property in the first place.

Here are a few tips on how to prevent wasps from ruining your summer:

  1. PREVENT THEM FROM BUILDING A NESTS

In the winter, the queen will go into hibernation. Her worker wasps will die off, and when she awakens in the spring, she will be ready to build her new colony. This means that there is a window of time that you can to find the nest and remove it without disrupting the entire colony.

A few common places to look for a nest would be hollow tree trunks, inside railings, eaves-troughs, and playhouses.

TIPS: Peppermint oil and dish soap are natural deterrents for wasps. Also, store bought decoy wasp nests are a great way to stop wasps from setting up shop in your yard. Wasps are very territorial and will respect another colony within a reasonable distance

  2. REGULAR YARD CLEANUP

Keeping your yard clean and free of debris is the best way to prevent a wasp colony from settling in your yard. It’s important to trim shrubs, pruning trees, cleaning up grass clippings, and removing piles of brush.

Wasps have a great sense of smell and and are especially partial to sweets. It’s important to keep sealed lids on garbage cans, as well as clean up spills/remove sweets quickly.

  3. WHAT NOT TO DO

Once a wasp colony has made itself a home on your property, its imperative that you leave the nest removal to the experts. Wasps are dangerous, and tend to get very angry in defense of their nest. DO NOT attempt to spray them out, or *cough vacuum them out of their nests. This is a sure way to get yourself and anyone around you hurt.
