Need to Know: Cockroaches

Cockroaches are just as gross as they look. They have been known to eat everything and anything, scavenge through all parts of your home, sewers, trash… you name it… Their saliva, droppings and decomposing bodies contain allergens which have all been linked to some major health issues, specifically breathing issues among children such as asthma.

It is important to call a professional right away if you suspect any sort of cockroach issue in your dwelling. As a home/business owner, it is more likely to find signs of a cockroach infestation rather than see an actual cockroach yourself. This is because cockroaches are nocturnal creatures and usually hide out of sight during the day while they scavenge for food at night.

So what are the signs to look for?

  • Droppings: Cockroaches leave a dust of black droppings less than 1mm wide and of varying lengths.
  • Smear marks on walls/floors: If water is abundant cockroaches will produce brown and irregular shaped smear marks.
  • Shed Skin: Cockroaches shed ‘cast nymphal ‘skins 5-8 times as they mature to adults.
  • Damage: Look for damages to food packaging, leathers, papers, books, and cardboard boxes.
  • Unusual odors: an established cockroach infestation produces a lingering and unpleasant musty smell that taints items they contact.

How do you prevent cockroaches?

  • Remove food sources: Store foods in dry, sealed, air tight containers.
  • Remove pet food for going to bed.
  • Rinse: Cans, bottles, and plastics before recycling them.
  • De-clutter: Keep dark spaces such as basements and cellars free of debris. Clean up paper stacks and use plastic storage bins rather than carboard.
  • Seal openings: Look for openings from the outside, all around your home/office and seal the entry points.
