Spring Pest Proofing Pointers!

1) Foundation Repairs:

  • Seal all cracks and crevices around foundations, chimneys, door frames, eaves-troughs and entry points. These are easy access for small critters to make their way into your home.

2) Wood Repairs:

  • Any old, wet/molding, rotting wood should be replaced. This is a perfect habitat for carpenter ants and other critters who tend to eat and/or live off of the moisture.

3) Screen Doors/Windows Screens/Mortar Joints:

  • Any loose or ripped screens on either doors or windows give a solid entry point for both crawling and flying insects. It’s important to seal joints, and fix rips to avoid pests having an easy access point into your home or shed.

4) Prune trees and shrubbery away from your home or shed:

  • Pruning your trees and shrubs away from your house or shed removes any leverage an insect or critter could have to gain entry to the home or shed.

5) Inside the home:

  • Moisture is a huge factor in many cases of pest infestation. It’s important to repair any seals around tubs, showers and toilets to avoid a pest problem. Check for leaks and moisture regularly throughout the summer.
  • Basements and storage area clean ups aren’t fun, but they’re necessary to avoid a pest problem! These spots, especially in dark, musty areas are a perfect place for pests and critters to make a habitat and get away from the heat.
  • Pantry/Dry Storage areas should be cleaned and expired food should be removed. A good “once-over” inside your home’s pantry could mean the difference between having a pest issue this spring/summer and not! Critters love to snack on dry goods as well as remnants found behind boxes and jars that you didn’t even know were there.

6) Enjoy the outdoors… BUT…

  • Family BBQ’s, and basking in the sun is a great way to enjoy this heat… That said, those bbq’s are usually accompanied by sticky popsicles, and sugary drinks… It’s important to clean up spills right away. Sugar is the sweetest smell/taste to most insects and it won’t take long for them to find the source… Cleaning up your mess’ right away will avoid insects and pests from making their way into your fun family gathering.
